The utility and renewable energy sector is facing an area of tension between challenges and opportunities due to political influence, endogenous and exogenous factors and, last but not least, wrong decisions. With the changing political framework conditions and increasingly critical effects of climate change, a series of transformation processes will fundamentally change the energy market. The switch to renewable energies will require massive investment in infrastructure and technologies, which will pose both financial and personnel challenges for supply companies. The energy supply of the future will increasingly rely on decentralised forms of energy in the areas of wind power, hydropower and photovoltaics. However, storage forms in the form of pumped storage power plants and power-to-gas technology will be at least as important in ensuring security of supply in times of energy shortages.
